Friday Thoughts

1. It is Halloween weekend...do I dare do this!?

2.   The sun finally shines today and boy does it make a difference!

3.  We have family coming into town this weekend and the anticipation is incredible around here.  The infamous Uncle Mike, the loved Aunt Becca, and the cutie pie Morgan!  Well, and of course the 'always ready to play Grandma Charlie.'

4.  Charley got a bike lock for his birthday but, the weather has turned cold and super windy so he can't ride his bike. So he is entertained with practicing his lock...today I saw him sitting cris-cross against the leg of our desk with the bike lock around his waist and table leg.  Yep, gotta love that.

5.  Henry woke up dry all week and Tuesday night he called out at 3 and 5 to pee...unfortunately, Ed's turn was mis-communicated.  Henry said he had to pee...but when he was standing peeing into the big potty he also pooped all over the floor...ugh.  But I think we are verging on no diapers all together so we were very proud how he got up twice and went back to bed decently.  I think to make life easier we will stick with the diapers or pull ups for another month or two.

6.  Are you in need of a drop leaf table, a new crock pot, or a new pair of slippers.  CSN Stores is a great place to look for Christmas presents...they often offer free shipping.

7.  I have taken to liking La Croix sparking water...in particular Ed and I are both enjoying the sparkling cran-raspberry.  My friends Molly and Kim encouraged me to try it.  It has totally eliminated the pop craving during my day, doesn't have any calories, chemicals, or caffeine...all good things right now in my life.  Give it a try.

8.  My mom is coming to visit next week for a few days and I can't wait.  Typically, I get overwhelmed when she is here - I go from being so excited to dreading the end and I forget to enjoy the moments involved in the visit.  I am not going to do that this time.  I am not going to get snappy or crabby.  I am going to take advantage of Ed's offers and get out and do some Xmas shopping with her in the evening.  Can't wait mom!

9.  My belly button is obnoxious these days and occasionally a band aid smooth it out, but a band aid is painful to remove at the end of the day.  So I am just going with the pig snout that has resided in the middle of this mound in my midsection.  This week some gals in our mommy/child class noticed it and we discussed pregnancy belly button experiences for a good 10 minutes.  I am guessing Ed isn't having these kind of conversations with his friends/coworkers.

10.  Today the boys and I journeyed out into the sunshine to pick up sticks that littered our lawn from the high winds that occurred this week.  By 3 in the afternoon, I am just going to be honest, bending over repeatedly, is really really hard for a pregnant mama.  The job is done, but I seriously am going to freak if I have to bend over much more today to pick up toys, socks, or crumbs on the floor.

11.  Am I a bad mom if I am totally dreading and hoping to avoid the all school dance tonight.  I just think that with the weekend guests, the class Halloween party today, Halloween party tomorrow, and trick or treating on Sunday, our weekend is full enough.  My sister had a good point though...taking an hour to wander over might just be more enjoyable than the extra energy that my boys are going to want to release around 6:30 tonight.  So we'll see.

12.  We have so much Halloween candy in our house right now.  But walking through Target today did I have the urge to buy some Twix bars and Baby Ruth because those aren't part of our mix...YES!  But I had control and didn't....I am just going to try and hold out until Sunday night when the boys are in bed...I can raid their stash!

13.  Have a festive weekend.  Enjoy the last few fall days, enjoy the Halloween festivities if you choose to, and be safe and happy with your family!

RECIPE ALERT! FORGOTTEN INGREDIENT!

I forgot to list this ingredient on my recipe for White Chili!  Thank you mom for questioning how it becomes a soup without any substantial liquid.  I AM SO SORRY to those that have made it ...but oddly loved it.  On the recipe card the 1 cup of chicken broth is written in my handwriting so the person who gave me the recipe forgot to tell me about that ingredient too.  Hopefully this will break the cycle.  It really is a winner of a recipe!

And a few of you emailed me telling me you tried and loved it and was going to tweak it next time...adding chicken broth!  HAHA!  Good for you for figuring out the mystery ingredient.

My mom did say that she is impressed with my cooking these last few years.  She knows me and knows that I make oatmeal cookies (reading the recipe off the oatmeal container) but forget the oatmeal.  And then there was the time when I tried making Cream of Wheat by myself...and couldn't believe that 3 tablespoons of the cereal would make my normal helping...I figured it was a misprint on the box.  Let's just say I used 3 cups and the entire pan overflowed and was a cement like mix.  I think my mom made me buy a box of Cream of Wheat to replace the stash.

Anyways, when in doubt email me if you question whether something doesn't seem right in a recipe I share.  I have a history with getting things a little wrong.

Hope that it didn't impact anyone too much.  So sorry.

Who better...

than a pregnant mama to receive this package in the mail:

A little bit ago I posted about Hersey's candy here.  It wasn't a post that I came up with while lying awake at 3:30 am feeling this little baby kick.  But I am sure after a few of these treats the baby will be kicking a good Thank you!

I admit I was totally trying to win four packages of Hersey's candy - because WHO DOESN'T LOVE HERSEY'S candy.  I WON!  And today when we arrived home from picking Charley up for school there was a box too heavy for Charley to carry.  We tore it open and man you should have seen the three of us hopping around it like it was a million dollars!

I know that some people think this hobby of blogging is a little silly.  But it is so fun for me and doing these little things can sometimes pay off...because my Halloween candy was delivered to my doorstop, in time for Halloween, on one of the coldest  and rainiest days yet!  There were even a few snowflakes sighted this morning!
You know what I will be nibbling this afternoon!

What candy are you passing out this year?

What's for dinner?.........Ham, broccoli, and cheese stromboli

Ham, Broccoli, and Cheese Stromboli

2 cups cubed ham
1-2 cups shredded cheese
1 can of cream of celery soup
1 cup ( I use a little more) cooked broccoli
1 package of frozen pizza/bread dough

 Pizza crust

3 cups all purpose flour
1 Tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 package of regular or quick active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
3 Tbsp. olive oil or veg. oil
1 cup very warm water

I mix them all together in my mixer and let it knead for 5-8 minutes.
Cover with saran wrap and let rise for a good 45 minutes or until doubled in size.
I then take it out and knead it a little by hand on a lightly floured surface.

Roll it out into a large rectangular shape.  9 x13 type size

Filling:

In a bowl mix the cooked broccoli, cubed ham, and soup.
Pour in the crust and then fold over the dough so it meets on top and pinch so it is cinched tight.  You don't want it to leak.
Put a few slits in the top.

Bake at 400 until golden brown (about 20-25 minutes!)

Knowing the Greatness in our family!

We are blessed when we are able to visit family and our boys can know and love them.
This visit was special because Great Grandma helped Grandma Charlie care and keep the boys busy while Ed and I went to the Packer game.  They even played a game of Slap Jack with Great Grandma!
I couldn't pick a favorite picture because I loved all the expressions. And boy did Grandma Charlie and I have to do some convincing to get these pictures taken - but man was it worth it.

Happy Birthday, Charley!

Kids are so excited about their birthdays...but I think as moms we catch our breath on our child's birthday.
We realize how long the days often seem, but yet as another birthday passes we are left wondering where the years are going and why they keep picking up speed.

It seems like just yesterday when this little guy turned 1.
And today he turns 6.
As he headed back to school after a nice fall break I yelled, today is your first day of Kindergarten as a 6 year old.  And he proudly smiled and nodded.
My first son is now out of the first five years of life stage and is now coming up quickly on the double digits.

So today I will share 6 (and only 6 of the infinite number) things that I LOVE about this boy...

1.  I love that he tenderly loves his brother.  Whether it is taking his hand, sharing his toys, keeping watch, not leaving him out, or wanting to come home after school instead of going on a play date because he knows Henry is waiting and anticipating his big brother's arrival.

2.  I love that he is growing up into a fine young man in his own time, but without too much of a struggle...whether it was going from breast to bottle, diapers to potty chair, crib to big boy bed, preschool to kindergarten, non-reader to reader...it has been pure joy watching him grow and progress.

3.  I love how he eats like a champ.  He has always eaten without being too picky or complaining much.  I love that I can send things like carrots, grapes, bananas, pears, celery, cucumbers, apples, broccoli, and oranges to school for snack and he enjoys them all.  Lucky.

4.  I love how he is beginning to show me more and more that I can trust his choices in friends and activities.  I don't have to spend as much time figuring these choices out myself.  I can follow his lead and am realizing that he does know who he is comfortable with, who he enjoys, and what he likes to spend his time doing.

5.  I love that as much as he enjoys playing Star Wars, Legos, and other boy things with his boy friends; he also has a solid base of girl friends who he enjoys just as much.  His first playgroups were all girls and many of them are still some of his most special friends.  I love that he sees beyond the pink and pigtails and enjoys all kiddos.

6.  I love that he has always been a pretty good sleeper.  He napped until he was more than 4 years old.  Bedtime has always been very routine.  And lately, he is able to room with his rambunctious little brother and settle him down at night so they both fall asleep rather quickly and smoothly.

There are tons more that I could list here.  But I am going to keep it at 6 because his time is up playing his new Cars Wii game with his daddy and brother.  And bedtime should have been 45 minutes ago.  He has a pile of new books and the choices are amazing...I wonder what he will read about tonight...space, his body, places around the world, how things work, or an adventure with the Magic Tree House kids.

Happy Birthday my son...even if you push me a little each day to increase my patience or creativity, I know that this time in my life as your mother, still living in my nest, is precious and passing by so fast.  And soon enough you will spread those wings of yours and soar out on your own.  So I will treasure the challenge of being your mama and take a moment tonight to sigh and realize that your birthday was also my first BIRTH day and you changed my world in such amazing ways on October 25, 2004.

Love,
Your mama

Lego Birthday Party Details...

I have had quite a few people emailing me asking how the party went for Charley...he turns 6, officially, tomorrow!  You are asking for details, so I will let you know how our first official KID birthday went.

In the past we have done family parties with relatives, not our entire family...just a few randoms who could come.  We also did a little surprise party for Charley with his playgroup when he turned 4.   But this one was the first one where we let him do the inviting.  He got to pick the friends without mama and daddy thinking about our family friends.  We decided long ago that we would do what other friends do and say that he could have 6 friends since he was turning 6 (however, we did count the neighbor sisters as one).

We also decided last year that we would do kid birthday parties every other year.  So last year we celebrated as a family and he loved it.  I don't doubt he will be excited about next years family birthday.   I am so glad we waited til this year to do a kid birthday party because I really enjoyed just having the kids and not trying to entertain the parents too!  I could focus on the kid fun to be had and just deal with a kid menu :).

I was late getting our invites out.  I am a spur of the moment kind of person.  Once he had settled on his guest list and we noticed that more than half of the kids were girls...I felt the need to guide him in his party theme.  When I suggested Lego's...just plain Lego's...and gave him some of my ideas...we were on our way.  I got my ideas on the Internet and out of my own little head.

Here was the invite..and I have to say that being the spur of the moment mom that I am when it comes to this kind of stuff worked to my advantage.  I composed the invite online, emailed it to the office supply store in our town and had 12 copies, I made extras for family, printed in color...for only 7 bucks!  WOO HOO!

I had things pretty much scheduled down to the 10-15 minute interval.  There was no time for chaos or running wild.  Ed was smart and about an hour before the party said that one of us should be in charge, and that should be me, and that I should just tell him what to do.  Instead of both of us trying to run the show.  So he mainly got the lunch ready (which he did an amazing job at) and checked in on me and made sure I had everything I needed at all times.

When the kids arrived we swept them down to the depths of our basement...some of you who know us might be cringing...but don't worry...we had the half of the basement that we had cleared out long ago all cleaned up and decorated and it was a perfect space for the group to run, dance, and play.  When they got downstairs we had the Lego table set up and lunch bags out with their names on the bags.  They sat and decorated the bags (for their prizes) and chatted.  The group was very diverse...which worked to my advantage.  Most of the kids didn't know each other at all so they were all a little shy.

Once bags were decorated and standing off to the side we circled up and I did the teacher thing...made them do introductions. They all told their name and how they knew Charley.  It was really cute!   Then I had them get into two random teams and we did our first of a few relays:

1.  Spoon Relay:  Using a spoon, carry a Lego across the basement and put it in your teams bucket and race back and pass off the spoon.  Each player had to go a number of times!  There was lots of cheering.  They loved it!  We did this one twice.

2.  Then they ran the tongs relay...they had to grab a Lego with cooking tongs, carry it to their bucket, and drop it in.  The kids liked this one too!

3.  Lego grab:  Then I split them up into teams of two and sprinkled duplo Lego's all over the floor.  They had to take turns with their teammate running out, grabbing a lego, and bringing it back to their bucket.  THEY LOVED THIS ONE!

4.  Then we did the Lego drop...they knelt on chairs and each had 6 Lego's to drop into jars.  This one went over okay.

All of them got to pick a piece of Halloween candy after each race!  Very exciting!

Ed popped down periodically to check in and I think he was in awe, as was I, that the kids were all cheering and though they were loud it was the right kind of noise.  So fun!

He told me that the pizzas were finishing up.  So I circled them up and we played a few rounds of bingo.  I had Charley stack 12 duplo blocks together so I could easily hand out the playing pieces.  I made the cards with stickers that I had on hand.  I wasn't sure how this would go over but they loved it and would have kept playing but Ed announced lunch was ready.

We had hoped to have the whole party outside but there was a little rain earlier in the day so we used the basement for the kick off of the party.  But by lunch it was nice out so we had them eat outside...a parents dream!  Juice boxes, pizza, finger jello cut into Lego sized pieces (red, blue, and yellow), and apple slices.

Ed had the pizza cut into small squares and the kids just reached out and filled their plates. They were so hungry for lunch that they all chowed down but the conversation that started up was so darling. They all shared about their last birthday parties. I thought it was so cute how some went bowling, some had family gatherings, some had sleepovers, etc. It was cute how they showed excitement for each one.

After eating they watched Charley open his presents.

Then we sat back down for birthday cupcakes. They were still all full but they gobbled down some of the brightly frosted creations.

As they started to bounce I could tell things were about to get a little crazy so I grabbed the large Lego block with the index card attached and announced that it was SCAVENGER HUNT TIME! The entire group listened to the rules (They were to stick together as a whole group and wait to read the clue until everyone was there). I read the clue and they took off. We had one secure reader in the group who took charge of reading the cards. They bounded around the yard as a group, even Henry kept up. The final clue led them to the enormous leaf pile that we have been raking up and slowly adding to our compost pile. Buried in the leaves was a large bag with a tag that said, "Bring to Charley's mom." They ran it over to me and we headed to the drive way for a game of Hot Bag!

Hot Bag was a birthday family game when I was growing up. We loved it. It is played like hot potato but instead of a potato you pass bags with their take home goodie in them. You play until everyone has ended up with a bag...playing music and when the music stops the person holding the bag takes the bag and puts it behind their back to open once everyone has a bag. The kids LOVE this and you can make it take as long as you want. The game ended right at 1 but I had told a few parents that 1:15 was probably a better pick up time.

So after they opened their goodie bags and found Halloween strobe skull flashlights in them, we circled up to play "Lego, Lego, Who has the Lego?" (otherwise known as Doggy Doggy Where's your bone?)

The kids had all played this before so I ran through the directions quick and we began playing ( One person hides their eyes and sits in the middle of the circle. You sit in a tight circle and secretly pass a Lego behind your back and the leader says stop the person with the Lego holds it slyly behind their back. Everyone tries to look guilty to make it hard for the guesser. The guesser has 3 guesses to see if they can figure out who is holding the Lego.) The kids enjoyed it. Everyone got a turn and by the time we were finishing up the last persons turn parents were pulling up!

The whole thing went super fast and super slick. Ed was amazed that we had no out of control or moments when we were thinking "when is this going to be over".   It never got too loud. Toys weren't touched. Everyone looked to be having a good time. The volume was all cheering and laughter!

I can see how an at home birthday party can maybe be more stressful.  The entire time leading up to the party you fear that the house is going to get wrecked, they aren't going to be entertained, they won't like the activities planned, you won't have enough planned, the kids won't get along...etc.  Where at a bowling alley or gymnastics center you know they will be entertained.  But I am glad we stuck to the good old fashioned birthday party.  And I think all the kids had a great time.

Weeeeeee! We went to the Dells!

We recently did a 24 hour mini-vacation with the boys.  It was our first official vacation with just our family.  We got a nice deal at an indoor water park in Wisconsin Dells.  The 24 hours were jam packed but at the point of pregnancy, the age of the boys, and having tied it in with a visit with Grandma and the Packer game...it was plenty.  We spent lots of time at the water park.  Explored the theme park.  And enjoyed some yummy meals at the restaurants.  We pretty much had the place to ourselves which was SUPER nice with the boys being as young as they are.  It was easy to keep an eye on them.

We moved from one area to the next and just kept rotating around.  The boys were in heaven and Ed and I enjoyed watching their pure and innocent joy at the whole adventure.

Part of our package involved the "Theme Park" and so we took advantage of that.  The boys rode the carousal.  Ed took them each on their first spin on the go-cart track, and we played a round of mini-golf.  The boys played a few racing video games...and so did mom and dad.  Charley hit a button while passing a machine and won 100 tickets by accident so they each got to pick a few prizes from the prize booth.  And Ed and Charley did the ropes course.  I was so proud of Charley for being so brave!

Are you Ready for some....

It is once again Sunday...and the stakes are high!  Packers play the Vikings and our hearts are pounding hard for a win!  It is the ultimate satisfaction to live in the land of the Purple People and earn a victory against them...especially with Favre in their pockets now.

Many years ago, before we were married, I became the ultimate girlfriend because of a family connection.  My dad went to college with a guy named Paul.  And their friendship expanded when their "first ladies" became great friends.  Kids became part of the picture...family weekends at hotels...New Years celebrations...weeks up north...Paul was a reader at our wedding...the evidence continues...they are special family friends.  They became heroes when they offered Ed season tickets ( they get 6 and they were willing to sell two of them to him) and it has been happening for longer than I even know...like I said, before we were married.  Ed sells them off to his good buddies and a few lucky Packer fans that we discover each year.

Whether you are a Packer fan or not...there is no experience, I hear, that is like the Sunday afternoon atmosphere in the Midwest city of Green Bay, Wisconsin.  The tailgating, the spirit, the team apparel that people wear to show their support, the parking on lawns, the Bloody Mary's at 9 am or earlier, the high fiving, and more.  If you have the opportunity to attend a game or roam the streets prior to a game - TAKE IT!  It is good for your soul - whether you LOVE football or not.

Thanks to Grandma Charlie and Great Grandma Penny, Ed and I got to escape the daily grind of being parents and pretend it was 8 years ago, before were were married.  When we held hands, and enjoyed an adventure of our own for the day.  I found peace knowing my boys were in complete heaven and I was with my best friend, and he was in heaven.

We got to experience the fly over this game.  It is something that takes your breath away and brings tears to my eyes every time I get to sit and let it sink in.  It is unlike anything and it is such a moment of Country.  I can not find the words to describe it.

And as the game is about to start the crowd roars and the fans have a feeling that anything is possible.  Anything!

Oh, I forgot to mention that whether you are a woman who enjoys the game of football or the nachos at the stand around the corner...I am guessing we all can appreciate this!

When it is all said and done, we didn't get the glory of a win.  But we are hoping that this Sunday we do!  And so as we watch the beginning of the game and we think of Paul and Betty sitting, bundled up, sharing a spiked cherry with our friends Casey and Katie, surrounded by the green and gold crowd we will remember our afternoon sharing in the Packer pride.  Even if I opted to wear maternity clothes instead of Packer wear.

An experience unlike any other.
Spent with my husband - the man that keeps me grounded.
And shares in the touchdowns and Lambeau leaps of our life together.

An Evening of Old Fashioned fun!

Sometimes an activity is spotted in a local paper and you pause and think...that looks like fun.  And sometimes you take the chance to check with friends to see if they would like to go for it and join you.  And sometimes that outing happens at just the right moment in your life and makes everything seem all better.

That activity seemed a little over-priced going into it, but the old fashioned trick or treat outing at a near by park turned out to be wonderful.  The weather was decent enough that we survived as the sun set and night fell.

Uncle Greg saw a NASA costume at a science museum he recently visited.  He splurged, bought it, got it in the mail, and it arrived an hour before we were to leave on our first Halloween dress up outing for the season.  Happy Birthday, Charley!  So the NASA astronaut and Buzz LightYear are the costumes for the year and I can't stop smiling!

Friends that came into our life when Charley was Henry's age joined us and made the outing that much more enjoyable!

The Old Fashioned Trick or Treat experience was awesome.  The treats they were given were just that, old fashioned (taffy, sucker stick things, a jacob's ladder game, crayons, etc.).  The people were dressed up...old fashioned.  And they were all sitting outside of the little houses that this park is known for.  We will go back to get a peek inside the one room school house, doctors office, and more.

As the kids, and adults, started to get a little too chilled we were guided back to the horse drawn trolley by candlelight.  And as we walked out all four adults agreed we would do this again, definitely.  The amazing thing is...both of us moms are pregnant.  Which means next year - we will both be pushing strollers ... and that is unreal but also so exciting!
