Charley's 8th birthday party

On October 25, 2012, our Charley turned 8.
Our tradition has been that every other year he gets to have a kid friend birthday party.  This tradition started in Kindergarten.  He had pondered ideas for an entire year...but, when I excitedly suggested a Halloween themed birthday party, once in his life, he grabbed on.  Within minutes I had him committed and told him the plans were rolling so he couldn't change his mind.

I knew I could come up with at home fun for a Halloween party...but a Ninja party...not so much.
Some of his initial food requests were...a salad bar or a sandwich bar.   But we convinced him hot dogs would go over better and would be way easier.  But I love that our boy loves salad bars and making his own sandwiches.

So here is the run down on his party.
My blog is also my children's baby books...so, I apologize if sometimes it comes across that way.

Charley, as your friends arrived (some in costumes and some not) they were invited to decorate a treat bag and a cupcake (that they would eat later).

We had cupcake trays filled with all sorts of different candies...

(skittles, M&Ms, gummy worms, dots, skittles, sprees, candy corn, smarties, dots, and so many more)

Once they were done they headed outside, where it was about 40 degrees but they didn't care.  They played tag with your daddy until mama had things finished up inside.

Once everyone was ready we gathered on the driveway, split into 3 teams of four, and were given a scavenger hunt challenge.  You all ran around solving clues and collecting envelopes that had cut out skeleton parts.  Once you all had all 7 envelopes their group had to assemble their skeleton.  The kids worked together and raced around and completed this task - way to quickly :)

The kids assembled the skeletons on the picnic table.
Afterwards we sang to you and ate the cupcakes...yes, before lunch, and WOO HOO! Outside.
We all know that cupcakes and carpets don't mix

At this point we moved inside and daddy had darkened the basement a tad.
We sat in a circle and I read a story in the dark and passed around body parts in bags.
The kids giggled and had a great time.
After the story we went around the circle and each kiddo made one guess on a single body part.
Then I revealed the secrets.

Since I had them in a circle we also guessed a few jars of candy.

While I was doing all this with the kids my mom and Ed whipped up the lunch and then I served it up.
The kids had hot dogs, blue and orange finger jello, carrot sticks, and pickles.
And juice boxes that I had decorated like mummies.

Then we opened presents and headed back outside for relay races.
Things like...walk with an orange balloon between your legs...pass the balloon under over to all your team mates, run with a skull head on a spoon, and then we had lots of extra time so we played about 5-8 recess games that I pulled from my arse...thanks to my teaching days.

The kids had a great time, I think.
I had a headache when it was all done.
I could have used a hot bath and a glass of wine, but instead got picked up immediately by a friend and went off to conquer my first 4 mile running race.

My mom was here and watched over Sydney during all the chaos and snapped a few pics on her camera too I am sure.  She pointed out little things that I didn't notice because I was so involved in the action.  She loved seeing the kids hugging and cheering during the relay races and she thought the kids sat down in a cute row during cupcake eating on the deck.  I wish I could have taken more pictures.

I hope Charley looks back at his 8th birthday party and knows that it was planned with love, that his mom and dad sat up the night before organizing the scavenger hunt for plenty of time, and that he was so lucky to have so many fun classmates and neighbors come and make him feel so cool.

I sometimes wonder if we will regret not throwing him a kid party every year.  But I truly believe in soaking up these younger years with at home parties where simple fun is enjoyed by all.  I know that probably in the near future he will request a buddy or two to sleep over and there will be no work on my part.  These years really do just keep going faster and faster.  And the every other year has to bring some appreciation, anticipation, and balance.

Happy Birthday, Charley.
You are the little guy who changed your daddy and I into who we are today.
You keep us challenged and make life so much more fun.

differences I relish

Two boys. One hamster.

Very different personalities with little white furry things.

There's this guy.

And then there is this guy.

This guy.

And then this guy.

Charley had a gentle kind touch that started out shaky but his confidence grew.
And Henry...well, he just couldn't stand the excitement.
His grin was there for the entire little pre-bedtime hamster playdate.

And it is the mix of these two personalities and the fact that this hamster sleeps ALL. DAY. LONG and wakes about 25 minutes before bedtime that has me pondering this addition to our family.

However, the excitement that this little guy has over that little creature is something I also have to ponder.  Can we handle it?

Only time will tell.  This week we will enjoy him for one more day.  And then say "Good-bye Coconut! Come again anytime."

What we've been up to...

Charley asks often if he can go ask the neighbors to play.
He says, "I want a friend to play with."
Even though I don't remind them ALL the time, but just once in a while that they could consider each other friends.
I know that someday they will realize that the greatest gift we gave them
was each other.

But for now they only see each other as brothers.

Brothers who worked together to surprise the little ladies in our neighborhood with some sweet treats on St. Patrick's day.
The dollar section at Target had some rainbow striped taffy type candy.
I bought a few packages and we threw a few pieces of that and some golden wrapped candy in zip bags.  (rainbows and pots of gold) They put them little goodies in a lunch bag and wrote
"Happy St. Patrick's Day!  Love, the Leprechauns"

Then they were stealth little spy delivery boys.
They snuck up to the houses and rang the doorbell and ran.
Or rather, big brother directed Henry where to hide and he ran up and rang the doorbell.
It was quite comical to watch.

They had a great time.
Looking at these pictures I have to snicker because it has been the reality for over a year.
Henry is catching up to Charley in size.  His feet are almost the same and many of the clothing items that Charley wore just last summer fit Henry.
Interesting.

And yet, when we see our boys playing out with the neighbors they still look so little to us.
They are great buds.
They really are.

Great buds who also recognize this little sweet treat.
Every once in a while they break from their big boy play and give her their undivided attention.

She has figured out the game of chase.
She will crawl quickly, pause, look back, giggle, and then quickly crawl again.
And she loves when they catch on and play along.
It is kind of a surprising little gift the third baby.
You get to sit back and watch the game of chase evolve instead of being the one to necessarily teach it.

Three of Syd's favorite things these days..

1.  Smoothie drinks --- If she sees you making them she gets quite excited.

2.  The outdoors -- she loves to roam and explore.

3.  Her brothers -- she loves watching their shenanigans.  And she actually puts her little hands out in front of her and flips her wrists and lifts her shoulders like she is saying, "I have no idea what they are up to..."

Today:

--gloomy but no rain yet.
--boys to school ...girls did a little spring cloths shopping (for the kids).
--the rest of the afternoon will be hunting for shorts.  I need to take inventory of who fits into what.

This moment...

This moment - takes my breath away.
When your child picks up a book to read...
out of the blue....
snuggles in...
and gets lost in a story.
A bigger than usual story.

Our boy is a reader.
He has been for a long time.
He picks up books often.
But last week, for some reason, this moment really hit me.
We have plenty of these moments....

Plenty of these moments where a mama can literally see their brains getting zapped by the screen.

But they have been fighting colds.
And this tv time let's their bodies rest.

So we are taking it easy.
And this is the easy that makes this mama's heart soar.

Hitting the slopes...

Daddy's Super Hero cape got some snow action.
He took his TWO boys to the ski hill on Sunday.
Here are the three of them going up on the lift.

They spent almost the entire day at the hill.
When I popped over to see them in action I think about the future.
I know that right now it is a lot of work for Ed.
They stayed on the bunny hill most of the day because that is where Henry needs to be.

But in the not too distant future Ed will have two boys who will hit the slopes with him.
And that is a pretty exciting thing.
I get a little jealous watching the fun and adventure that they have.
I sometimes get caught up in the day to day mothering...and I see Ed's interactions with the kids as sometimes less about the daily grind but more about the moments.

Moments that are so thrilling.
Moments that bring being a daddy to the next level.
And though I wouldn't give up the day to day grind with the kiddos,
I hope to find some hobbies and little adventures to just plain enjoy with the kids.

Henry is ready for an official ski helmet.
And our big puzzler is whether the kiddo would participate independently in a lesson.
He wouldn't do the tennis lesson last summer.
It is too expensive to sign him up for this...if he isn't going to take in the full experience.
He did say many times that evening, "Hey Charley, wasn't that fun skiing with daddy?"
So, we'll see.  February is a month full of potential.

So I will now focus on getting my knee stronger so that I could take a lesson or two...
And when Sydney is ready....we can all enjoy the slopes.
Wishful thinking...we'll just have to wait and see.

Start your engines....

Introducing our Scout.
This is new to our family this year.
And this weekend was our first Pinewood Derby experience.

This is Charley's car.

This is the track.

This is Charley's car on the track.

This is Charley's car...side by side his little brother's car.  Yes, you heard me right.  They now let little siblings (girls or boys) race their cars too.  And they can even win awards.

This is Henry's car on the track.  (I will let you imagine whether he is in the lead...or not)

Charley was blessed with quite the cheering section...
Both sets of his grandparents and his family.

When they weren't cheering for Charley.
Or dreaming about the winning trophy.

They were busy being entertained by the birthday girl.

Notice Grandma Barb trying to coax a puff from Miss Syd.

Everyone held her.
Except me.

This year the boys raced and had a blast.  There was lots of hopping up and down.
The door prizes they won were pretty exciting.
They didn't come away with any medals or trophies.
Maybe next year.

I wonder if they will let the moms build cars and race....
