bath time with this little babe

Bathtime changes with each age and stage.  You begin with sponge bathes until that ugly little belly button mystery falls off.  There are stages and ages where they hate bath time, or maybe they were always a lover of this time of the day.

Maybe it brings a calm culmination to the end of an exciting, tiresome, overwhelming, or perfect day.
It warms their little bodies. And gets them ready to read books before bed.

Or maybe you are cooped up because the weather is SO cold and
a mid afternoon bath is something to do.
Sometimes you might be attentive mama and sit and chat and play games while they enjoy the bubbles.  Ordering bubble ice cream, or cream of bubble soup.

Othertimes, you might take the opportunity to wipe down the counters and give a quick scrub to the toilet.  Or you bring along a trash bag and go through the 50 bottles of lotion that are 5 years old.

Whatever the stage...don't forget to pick up your camera.
Capture it.  Because looking back....like at this post when there were little rolls....warms a mama's heart!  And these are the little things we never want to forget.

embracing the two year old helper

Friday mornings Sydney and I go to "Sydney's School."  It is Sydney's turn to love her Miss Shari time and for one hour during our 2 hour class we separate and I get to talk mommy stuff with a fun variety of moms.  I have loved being part of these classes and now it is just Syd and I.

This past week we were chatting about our kiddos particularly how much our littler ones eat and those of us "veteran" moms assured some of the new-er moms that one month they will eat a ton and the next they might not, or your first will be a great eater and your second a picky rascal.  Our wise discussion leader reminded us that we need to watch for cues as to when our children are hungry and when they are full so that we don't resort to food as entertainment...meaning, while we make dinner we let our little ones sit content in their high chair eating random snacks...when they are possibly not even hungry.  Such a wise reminder.

So after class I pondered the ways that I keep Miss Sydney busy when I am trying to get something done...usually in the kitchen.  Recently, she has come to really enjoy the idea of "helping."  So I pull a chair right up to where I am working and try to involve her.  A child's butter knife and a mushroom kept her busy for a good 20 minutes one evening.  And today while I was assembling chicken wild rice soup she stood and puttered with a large mixing bowl with a small amount of water in it.  She mixed it, touched it, and mostly scooped it with a teaspoon and drank it.

Another activity that keeps her busy for GOOD chunks of time is putting money into a piggy bank.

She sits or stands and is so proud to do this task.  (Note:  you have to know your child ...if they are into putting things in their mouth this is not a safe activity).

As I verge on having another two year old in my midst I know that this is a stage and age when they want to do the "big kid stuff"  and they want to be around and engaged in what you are doing.  She wants to sit in the big kid chairs and even drink from a big kid cup at times.

When I announce that the dishwasher needs unloading, Miss Sydney squeals with excitement and is the first to arrive at the scene.
When I unload the washing machine into the dryer, she is right there helping.
As I fold towels she is right there (sending her with one towel at a time allows her to help without slowing me down too much).
While I am making dinner she likes to help take what I have chopped and put it in the bowl, or she will set the table.  If I am making pizza dough...giving her a small piece to play with keeps her occupied.

Keeping your little one nearby and engaged in the task you are trying to accomplish is a win win for the two of us.   She is happy, learning, and busy. And I can cross off a few things off my list.

How to you get things done with a busy toddler on the loose?
What other ways can you have them "help?"

loot vs. loo

 The loot, of one child.

Yesterday, one of my children was busy all day counting, sorting, and pondering his candy loot.

It is hard work for a little guy.

Yesterday they put a piece in 21 envelopes to enjoy from now until Thanksgiving.
The rest is getting donated...why am I having a hard time letting this stuff go.
Probably because I enjoy this stuff, sadly, just as much as them...

And while one child finds candy entertaining...

Another little finds our loot  entertaining...
(get it loo...as in bathroom)

Lot's to do today.
Guests this weekend.
Busy morning.
Productive afternoon...

GO!

Syd's strut

There are many lessons our children teach us.
But gazing at this little sassy girl I have to laugh.
Today I could have tried to model her attitude in this picture when...

1. I walked out of turning in Henry's preschool registration papers to the new to us and  religious based program.  I stood chatting with the older church preschool principal type lady for a good 10 minutes...and upon walking out I noticed Syd had pulled down half of my dress top and had exposed my bra the entire time.  Oh ya!  I am sure they are glad to be welcoming our high class respectable family.  Looking forward to leaving a better second impression since our first will be hard to erase from their memory.  (Hey, at least I had a bra on, am I right, CF?)

I also could have modeled her strut when....

2.  Attempting the dealership carwash, where we get free carwashes and they no longer have a guy there helping people get on the track, the guy in front of us did something to jam the wash but I thought it was me so I panicked and backed up, rolling over the roller pushy thingy throwing the thing off track, making it my fault too.  For about 5 minutes while they tried to fix it ...I worried I had broken their carwash.  After fixing it the dealership guy just smiled and guided our van into the wash...maybe my right bra covered boob was still showing.  Who knows...I am just glad he smiled and waved us through.

I actually did strut my stuff as we exited the library, after trying the neighboring county's library that we have heard such great things about.  Registering our cards so we could check out books allowed me to learn that they don't know about our late fees at our actual county's library.  New start!  I will do better.  Promise!

Syd's first s'more

Rumor had it that National S'more day happened.
So we had to let Syd experience her first marshmallow and graham cracker s'more...

The Case of the Missing Muffins....

help me give a title to this picture...

Miss Sydney is a sassy girl from time to time.
She does this closed eye little confident sassy look that she gives me at times...
when she walks down the ledge of the pool, away from me...she looks back like I can do this.

Today I caught Sydney and Charley running around with medals around their necks...
In the spirit of the Olympics...what medal would Sydney win...

I know many family and friends who know Sydney catch up on my blog and many blog followers and friends have watched Sydney from when she was expected to now, her 18 month sassy self.

Let's here what caption you would give this picture.
