Happy Birthday Henry!

Happy Birthday Henry! On Saturday we had a birthday party for Henry. Most of our family was able to make the LONG trip here to spend the day with us. We also have a few really close friends take time out of their busy lives to come and celebrate the big day with us. We got lots of balloons since Henry loves balloons. I made Henry a cake that could compete with Charley's first birthday cake to win the award for most ugly cake. But it was made with love. He didn't dive in like Charley did, but rather picked at it slowly and enjoyed a healthy sized piece. Charley and his friends Emma and Elly blessed the party with the childish spirit. We ate yummy appetizers and then enjoyed a yummy meal of lasagna, bread, salad, and cupcakes. It was a perfect day. I was so glad to have the friends and family there. We hesitated on throwing a party like this because it was so close to Christmas and with the weather we didn't want family to feel obligated to be on the roads. But I am so glad that the roads were good for driving, friends were home and willing to spend time with us, and we had enough time to prep so that Ed and I could relax during the party and enjoy the company.

First birthdays are a little silly since the child, in this case Henry, really doesn't have a clue what is going on. But I think the first birthday is a huge moment for the parents, the mom's especially. This time around I tried to take it in as this might be the last first birthday we throw. Looking at how little he was 365 days ago and celebrating his growth physically. Relishing in the journeys he has already had and realizing that there is so much yet to come. As a child I always felt like a birthday was all about the person whose birthday it was. But now I realize how sentimental and reflective the day is for a parent (no matter if it is the first birthday or the 32nd birthday). A birthday is a day when two adults lives changed as they celebrate the arrival of a new little miracle who will hopefully grow and be a happy little person. Not to toot our own horn but Ed- We have done good!
