Wordless Wednesday

If only life always allowed for spur of the moment naps...

Because laying on a soft blanket, with the sunshine washing over you, makes it nearly impossible NOT to close your eyes...

When my children fall asleep, on their own, in the middle of their play -

I am breathless.
I am in awe.

I am trying so hard to soak up every second.  Because this is it.  And it is going WAY to fast.

For more Wordless Wednesday go here or here!

Look what the mailman delivered today...cheers!

This box of goodies was delivered today.

15 bottles!

Now you tell me...

Why would my husband jump on a deal to have 15 bottles of wine delivered to our house...

a. because a mom of three deserves to have her wine delivered right to the house.

b. because the box alone will provide hours of fun for the boys.

c. because coming home to three whiny kids and a crazy wife requires the wine rack to be well stocked.

d. because his in laws arrive within 24 hours.

e. because of all the above...plus it was a great deal! And now we have to get out of the mail order wine club....unless it proves to be too fantastic!

Happy hour at our house!

Things I Love on Tuesdays...packing lunches!

Lately, I have had some fun things come into my life that I have wanted to share.  So for a few weeks here I am going to share a post on Tuesdays showcasing a little item that I have come across and love.

This first week I am going to showcase some lunch boxes that are AWESOME!  When I came across the website, http://www.easylunchboxes.com/ I knew that these were a hot item.  I emailed Kelly and asked her about her boxes and she stuck a set of the boxes and a case in the mail for me to try!

I am not in the lunch packing mode for the kids yet, but next year I will become an expert when Charley ventures off to all day first grade.  I do however, pack lunches these days for the boys and they love when they come in a fun box.  I also love to pack lunches when we go on adventures and I pride myself on having very little trash at the end of the picnic.  I also had a new years resolution to help pack Ed's lunch more often...not doing so well on that resolution lately.  Soon, honey, soon.

So this past week we journeyed to St. Paul to the Children's Museum and we brought our lunches.  I packed us each our own little tray.  They all three fit perfectly inside the lunch box that you can also buy on her site.

The amount of food that you can fit into the compartments is plenty for a healthy sized lunch.  They are stronger than a "gladware" type container but probably not as durable as a "Tupperware."  But the price is incredible.  I have washed them in our dishwasher and they come out great!

After pulling them out at the Children's museum the boys sat with them on their laps, eating their lunch.  And the mom I was with noticed them...AND a stranger came right over and wanted to know where I got them.  They are that HOT!

Visiting their site you can get incredible ideas on packing fun lunches.  GO CHECK IT OUT

And stay tuned...I plan to show off a few of my lunch creations and possibly hold a give away for a set of these awesome lunch containers!

When you pack a lunch...what are some of your favorite items that you throw in?

On a scale of 1 to 6

Some mornings you wake up and you think...let's just stay in our PJ's. It is easy. It is cozy. It is why I wanted to "stay at home" with my kids. But then there are also mornings when you are spurred to get up and go. To take your 3, yes 3, kids downtown. Park in a parking garage. Trek across sky ways. Pay a bit of a fee. And enjoy an adventure.

Last Thursday I had a get up and go morning. And I was lucky to have a friend with three little girls, who had the energy to accompany us.   This was my first major outing with all three.

Unfortunately, with my three and her three...we no longer can ride in the same mini van. boo! So instead we followed each other, parked near each other, and it all went smooth.

Driving downtown St. Paul and maneuvering safely to our destination is a rush for me. I look at the busy life of the city at 8:30 on a Thursday morning.... the commuters eating their breakfast while they are driving, the people bustling across streets in fine work clothes...but, boy am I lucky to be strolling with my three kiddos into the exciting Minnesota Children's museum.

We got there as the doors were opening - hoping for a good hour before the crowds arrived. And we planned nicely. We had just about an hour where we were the only ones in some of the exhibits.

They cooked in the kitchen.
They enjoyed the lego exhibit.  We will be going back soon with the plan of just hanging out in this room.

A few shots of me and the boys oops!  Can't say that.  Here is me with the kids!

Here are the kiddos!
And before we left the "city" we walked to this candy shop and everyone got some old fashioned buttons to keep them busy on the ride home!

Oh, and when Sydney wasn't in my carrier, my arms, or the stroller...."bonus Auntie Jessie held her."

The boys LOVE this place and I need to make the journey "downtown" more often, because it is a nice outing.

On a scale of 1-6...it is a definite...

Monday- biting my nails.

It's Monday morning...and I am biting my nails...

Yesterday was a normal Sunday - but then Henry came in from playing outside and he was shivering...and it was not cold enough for him to be shivering.  Then he told me he was sick and he curled up on our guest bed while I was picking up in there.  Soon enough he had conked out.

It is always unsettling when your child puts himself to sleep.

He napped.  We woke him to give him Motrin.  He ate a little dinner.  Had trouble falling back asleep.  Woke up in the night 2am drenched in sweat.  More Motrin - change of shirt - and decided he should use his pillow and not his pillow pet for the rest of the night. I of course laid awake for at least an hour or two worrying about Sydney getting it.  Henry woke up at 5 complaining about a wet shirt again, but it was his pillow that was so wet from sweat but he wasn't sweaty or warm.  I think his fever broke.  But he also had a croupy cough.

So this morning I am biting my nails...wondering what the deal was and what is in store for us today.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This weekend I did some MAJOR cleaning in our kitchen.  Up top of our cupboards there are an array of vases...that were covered in an obnoxious layer of dust.  The tops of the cupboards could easily compete with the dust on the vases and win..at least two inches.  So Ed and I worked to wash all the vases, clean the tops of the cupboards - which then meant the whole kitchen needed a wipe down due to the dust that was flying.  We took down curtains in our lower level to wash - and found one of our kitchen cupboards coming off the wall, slightly.  So Ed had to fix that which entails emptying all our plates, bowls, and mugs for at least 24 hours while the glue etc. sets.  So my hard work will go unnoticed for the time being because the entire kitchen is smattered in dishes.  ugh.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday morning we took a family trip to Costco.  The boys didn't want to go but we lured them them there with promise of a sample tour.  We paraded through to get grocery bags and sampled ourselves silly.  It was hilarious.  I love how they have samples at the end of almost every aisle and they alternate every couple of food samples with a beverage sample.  Glorious.  I don't think we bought anything that we sampled.  HAHA!

But by the time we were leaving it was 12:15...and I told Ed that all my blog friends write about the awesome hot dog deal that Costco sells at their little food stand.  $1.50 and you get an "enormous" hot dog and a large pop.  So the males in our family all inhaled one and drank down some lemonade.  I had a few bites of Henry's.  Mom and Dad...wanna do the sample parade and hot dog lunch next Saturday?  HAHAHAHA!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't touch base with my mom or sister all weekend.  Unsettling.  But I know my sister was busy with fun plans and my mom was busy chasing Eli around and playing with Thomas the train and such.  My mom and dad are coming on Wednesday and staying until Sunday.  I pray the boys are feeling good so we can go out and do some fun adventures...bowling for real is on our list of things to do.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our niece Morgan turns 2 tomorrow.  Incredible how fast time flies.  I can't wait to hear about their weekend celebrations!  I have to pat myself on the back because I got her present sent and hopefully there on time.  And those that are close to me in "real life" know that getting to the post office and remembering people's birthdays is something I do not excel at.  So hip hip hooray!  Maybe this is a new day!

Here is Morgan turning 1!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Leaving you with a recent Sydney shot!  Doesn't she look happy about this silly pose!

Happy Monday - hoping for some blogging time later today when the boys rest and watch a little movie and Sydney naps.  We'll see.

Friday afternoon activity...

Friday afternoons...when spring is supposed to have arrived...we are once again digging deep into our creative brains for something to keep us all busy, inside. So I invested in a big bucket of these little things...and decided if it didn't entertain them for more than 20 minutes...then mama might stumble and knock it over. Picking them up would for sure take us through the 2 hour bewitching hour. Chopsticks would add a degree of difficulty.

Luckily, mama did not need to stumble. Charley was busy for over an hour! WOO HOO! Next Christmas you can all expect to get one of these lovely creations - that I have NO idea what we should do with. :)

Pottery Painting Pizazz!

Last week we, me and the three kids, along with some good friends, spent the afternoon at a local paint your own pottery shop.   I have wanted to do this for a long time.  We were the only ones there so we were able to take our time and enjoy the afternoon.  I was nervous the boys would get their painting done in 5 minutes...because at home that is about how long it takes them to finish a picture.  But amazingly, they lasted over an hour.

On our drive there we talked about how fun it would be to paint their very own mug.  I was so glad because I am all about clutter lately and I was determined to have them make something they would love and use.  I also knew it was kind of an special outing - expensive.

The walls are lined with pottery choices.

This is calling my name.  I will return to do one all on my lonesome or with a friend or two!  You can even have wine while you paint if you have a little pottery painting party!

The boys got to take their time and pick colors.

Both were very serious and enthusiastic.

A sign of a true artist....when you can paint...without looking.

Charley's Mug before:

Henry's mug before:

We had to leave the mugs there for the week to dry and then get fired in the kiln.  So we got them back on Thursday and these are the final products:

I would recommend this outing.  However, it is a little pricey.  I would recommend asking more questions before you start about the different options and ways you can decorate your mug.  We didn't learn until AFTER that they have stamps and stickers that would possibly help a smaller child decorate their mug.  I also think that a child could use a little brainstorming and planning time.  Maybe even a paper to draw out what they are thinking.  Even I would want to have an idea and plan.

2 months...comparison

It is hard to come up with fun ways to take a 2 month old's picture.  They seem to always be the same...laying on a blanket, sitting in the swing, bouncing in the bouncy seat...etc.

Last night we came up with this.  And to give credit...this outfit was made by my brother's girlfriend Liz.  And in a day or two I am going to share some more adorable onesies she created.  And if you are interested in connecting with her...she would love to sell you some.  You can even ask for certain shapes.  More on that later.

So here are some goofy shots of our 2 month old Miss Sydney.  Followed by a comparison of Sydney at 2 weeks vs. 2 months.  I will eventually get some pics of the boys...time.  I just need time.

A gift that leaves this mama...breathless.

Miss Sydney has been given many gifts in her first two months of life.
She is blessed with so many that love her.
There have been gifts that have made this mama - smile.
There have been gifts that have made this mama - sigh.
There have been gifts that make this mama - giggle.

But there was a recent gift that we recieved the other day...
And this gift had me doing all of these...but most of all...
it left this mama breathless.

You see I did a great baby book for my first, Charley.
I bought a baby book for Henry and started filling it out but then spent more time comparing Henry's milestones to Charley's book...instead of filling in Henry's book.
Then I started blogging and that seemed like the most incredible baby book.
I got behind on ordering pictures...and now it is too overwhelming.

So Sydney arrives...the third child and I have guilt on my heart for not making Henry a book.
How can I go buy her a book.  So I need to catch up with Henry while staying on top of Miss Sydney's.

So in the mail ...
We recieve a box from a friend.
Not a super close friend.  More of a person who has been in our life at fun times.  We have shared some crazy times back in the day.  She reads my blog, I am not even sure how that ever came about, but it makes me smile.  We run into each other when we go back to Ed's home town.  She and I exchange recipes.  We stay in touch a bit on Facebook.  So, yes, she is a friend.  But not a friend who you would expect to take time and creative energy to give such a wonderful gift.

Miss Sydney doesn't have to fret.  Her first two months of life are documented in pictures and adorable scrapbooking artwork...by such a kind and generous friend.  Thank you Nickie.  It truly is such an amazing gift.

These are just a few of the pages.  I just love it soooo much.
It was the first time I saw pictures from my new camera in print.
And it has inspired me to get my ass in gear and order some pictures from the last two years!

Friday Morning Leftovers...

Speaking of leftovers...Ed brought home Big Bowl last night for dinner. We hadn't had that for so long. So Delicious and there is just a teeny tiny bit left for lunch today. Yum.

Charley had his conference last night. He is doing really well. Needs to build up his confidence in how he is doing as a learner. But other than that we are very proud parents. His teacher is in a rough spot right with the classroom. It is pretty stripped down to the bones. Nothing on shelves...the walls are decorated minimally. She has to redo all her files, lesson plans, she is working without manuals. This weekend I will dig through my teaching collection and see what I can pass along. Just heartbreaking.

Sydney's doc went well this morning. Ed always comes to their well checks. I don't think this makes a great dad...because I know many dad's don't have the flexibility in their work day. However, this is one of the things that Ed is adamant about and it is just another way he is an amazing hands on father. How can I not fall in love with him all over again as he hold her during her shots...while I am the coward in the corner tearing up.

I am in the mood to tidy up today. The boys are wiped out from our exciting outing yesterday. So we will take it easy. I will get some cleaning and blogging done. The boys will work on a few things I have planned for them...and then maybe indulge in a little Scooby Doo.

We need garbage bags BAD. We are all out. I forget to buy them today at Target and there is NO WAY I am going back with all three again today. However, all three were wonderful today. The check out lady said, "Oh, you do have your hands full." I love this - I have friends with three that told me I would hear this...and it is true. I responded, "But they are all happy and under control so life is good." They were great little shoppers. So proud of them.

Sydney won't take the bottle anymore. Ugh. Ed looks so defeated after a few rounds with her in the evening. This morning we tried, hoping that a different time of day would make a difference. Nope. Boo! We are attempting daily now.

I have been blessed with a few new followers recently. I am so curious how you came across my blog. I used to do more link ups and I don't do them much these days...so if you could do a shout out and let me know how you came across me...just curious. Also, those of you who are new or old..if you don't have an email attached to your blog profile- YOU SHOULD. This allows me to respond to your comments...so if you ask a question or write something ...I can email back. I have made some really great friends this way! DO IT! and if you aren't sure how...let me know.

The sun is shining and so it gives us a burst of energy - however, it is still pretty cold out there. Spring - you have dilly dallied enough. Pull up your boot straps and march yourself into our lives...It is almost April for goodness sake!

Happy Weekending!

more blogs to come so say hi! Let's chat! Makes blogging so much more fun!

Still hungry...go here to read more leftovers!

Sydney's 2 month stats

Sydney had her 2 month check up this morning. She was a brave little girl and went with the flow for all of it. She got a shot or two. She got weighed and poked and prodded. Her stats...

11 pounds 13 oz. 76%
24 cm. long 95 %
Her head was 15.2 and that was 47%

Charley at 2 months...13 pounds 5 ounces, 24 1/2 cm long

Henry was a whopping 14 pounds 10 ounces and was 24 1/2 inches long

So little Sydney is long and lean! I am loving that my last is staying little just a wee bit longer...at least for now. :)

Pink..just can't get enough! - 8 weeks

I have a feeling that this girl is going to boycott pink when she is able to speak. After 6 years of very boyish blues, reds, and greens...I am enjoying the pinks, purples, and softer blues. The quilt you will be seeing is made by Ed's amazing mom! I will try to capture more of it in the coming days. Simply gorgeous!

Our 8 week old is smiling more as she beefs up and becomes our little dumpling girl.  Her wrists have little creases and her legs that are constantly kicking are most likely taking a little more effort to lift.  She is watching for her brothers and follows them as they pop in and out of her little world.  She is cooing and fusses only when she has a diaper issue or is hungry - or stuck in a spot too long.  She is still sleeping in by us, nestled in her bassinet, securely wrapped in our favorite swaddle blanket (arms down).  She is still sleeping from the 8 o'clock hour until the 4 or even 5 am hour.  Incredible and just such a blessing.  Life is good for this little bubble belly girlie Q.

In other news....
Lots of excitement going on here as we continue to melt into this family of five.  Today was our first outing, just mama and the kids, to downtown St. Paul for some fun at the Children's museum.  Charley has started his "spring break" even though there is a new blanket of snow covering our world - boo!  Laundry is caught up and is verging on being put away...the baskets are upstairs - and folks - this is an amazing accomplishment.  The only thing I feel grumbly about is that I have nothing planned for dinner and our fridge is looking more and more bare by the hour.  Happy Thursday!  More fun blogs coming REALLY soon...within the next 24 hours.  You know me...they come in bursts and there are plenty.  Just love the comments...they really are so kind and they totally motivate me to keep posting.  So thanks for taking the time.

The F word

My new (well, it's not so new any more) camera is teaching me a lot about life these days. Take a look at this picture...Life is all about this!

Do you see the focus of the picture is the sophisticated glass of wine and the bottle that my husband diligently brought home after I called and said I was ready to indulge in my first glass of wine post pregnancy.  (Sydney is sleeping a good 8 hours before nursing in the night so I feel safe indulging in a glass).  No, I am not learning to focus on the alcohol.  NO.  That's not it.

Rather, look at the background.  Do you see the mess?  It doesn't stand out in this picture because that isn't the focus.  That isn't what's important.

My days have gotten quite a bit busier since Sydney was born.  My days could be filled with tasks, like doing the dishes, folding the laundry, emailing, reading a book, sweeping the kitchen floor, playdates, a stocking the fridge, cooking meals where the side dishes compliment the main dish, showering, getting out of our pjs, turning library books in on time (well that one is important), and so much more...

But going on 2 months here...I have slowly learned to let all that go - not completely.  But let it go a little more.  By letting it go, and knowing that it is okay, the focus is no longer on that messy busy background, the yucky stuff, but rather it is focused on what's important in life right now.

And right now, that's sitting next to Henry and learning the letters in his name.  It's about reading with Charley.  It's nursing Sydney and wandering the house just talking to her about the rain pitter pattering outside.  It's about sitting down as a family for dinner and all being upstairs during the bedtime shenanigans (which have settled a bit).  It's about going to bed by 9:30 and getting a good 8 hours of sleep.  It's about indulging in jelly beans, a yummy coffee, or a Dr. Pepper because, damn it, my body is working hard these days helping this little miracle plump up like a dumpling.  It's about calling or emailing a friend to stay in touch and see how their day is going.

It's about knowing that the days are long but the years are short - so I better notice the days and suck every last bit of joy out of them.

This afternoon Charley's playdate friend was about to get picked up and I knew that he was going to fall apart and be overwhelmed with the end of such a fun friend experience.  I called a friend to share the anxiety that was building in me.  I was literally feeling shaky worrying about how I would get through the 2 hours before Ed arrived home.  I just wanted it to go smooth and happy.  All that worrying - most likely for nothing.  Since I focused on the important stuff we got dinner made while the boys sat nearby working on tasks with my help.  Focus.  I just need to create the focus that works for the moment.   And that focus was keeping the boys busy while getting dinner ready.  It wasn't the laundry baskets ready to be folded or the toys strewn about the house.

So, this evening as I enjoyed my first glass of wine in over a year.  And I sat with my hiccuping little bean sleeping peacefully in the bassinet.  And I thought - what a good day it was...I realized it was all because I focused on the right stuff.

So hears to focusing on the "right stuff"!

And since I am posting this tomorrow, or rather today....

If you took a picture of your day...what would be the focus of the shot?

Is it the messy...is it your catch up day for laundry and house tasks?  We all need to focus on this too so we can relax and really focus on the important stuff.

Do you have a sitter and you are out getting yourself a pedicure or haircut? Always good to focus some time on yourself.  Mama's are never in the pictures enough.

Or are you sitting down on the floor and playing Candyland for the 5th time without falling asleep?

Do share!

What's for dinner? - banana bread

When we are graced with the presence of a few of these lovely over ripe treats...we BAKE!  We bake some amazing Banana Bread.  I may have posted this recipe before but I don't have it listed on my recipes and I have friends ask for it..so here ya go.  I have tried many recipes but when I got this one from my friend Sherry I knew there was no other choice.  I have also experimented after hearing that we, Americans, over sugar all our food.  So I cut the sugar to 1 cup and changed the oil to applesauce and it still tasted AMAZING!

Banana Bread

1 1/2 cups sugar (I cut this to 1 cup)
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 2/3 cups flour
1/2 cup oil (I substitute with applesauce if I have it on hand)
1/2 cup water
2 eggs
1 cup bananas ( I use 2 bananas)

I grease my bread pan.  Mix the ingredients up.  And then...

Bake 1 1/2 hours at 300 degrees - start checking at 1 hour and 15 minutes.  Ready when knife comes out clean.  Let cool long enough so it pops out of the pan without breaking.
